What is a decentralized exchange?
A decentralized exchange (DEX) is a trading venue that lives entirely on a blockchain. Instead of depositing funds with a company that matches buyers and sellers on private servers, you trade directly from your own wallet against smart contracts — code that holds liquidity, quotes prices and settles every swap transparently on-chain.
The breakthrough design was the automated market maker (AMM), popularized by Uniswap in 2018: liquidity pools funded by ordinary users replace the traditional order book, so any token can be traded at any time without asking anyone's permission. Newer designs — concentrated liquidity, intent-based aggregators and fully on-chain order books like Hyperliquid — have since pushed DEX execution quality to parity with centralized venues.
Today DEXs handle hundreds of billions of dollars in monthly volume. They are the only way to trade long-tail tokens, the backbone of DeFi composability, and — after repeated centralized-exchange failures — the venue of choice for traders who insist on holding their own keys.

Frequently asked questions
What is a decentralized exchange (DEX)?
A decentralized exchange is a peer-to-peer marketplace where crypto trades execute directly on the blockchain via smart contracts. Unlike centralized exchanges such as Coinbase or Binance, a DEX never takes custody of your funds — you trade straight from your own wallet, and settlement is enforced by code rather than a company.
Do I need to complete KYC to use a DEX?
A decentralized exchange protocol does not open an account for you. You connect a self-custody wallet and pay network fees. That is separate from the exchange, wallet, and event-contract services offered with our regulated partners. Those services require identity verification and sanctions screening under an AML/KYC program before you can use them. See the Policy for which firm provides each service.
What is the difference between an AMM and an order-book DEX?
Automated market makers (AMMs) like Uniswap price trades algorithmically against liquidity pools funded by other users. Order-book DEXs like Hyperliquid and dYdX match individual buy and sell orders, like a traditional exchange. AMMs are simpler and always liquid; order books offer tighter pricing and advanced order types for active traders.
What fees do DEXs charge?
Most spot AMMs charge 0.01%–0.3% per swap, paid to liquidity providers. On top of that you pay the blockchain's network (gas) fee — a few cents on L2s, Solana or BNB Chain, and more on Ethereum mainnet. Perpetuals DEXs typically charge maker/taker fees similar to centralized venues.
Are decentralized exchanges safe?
DEXs remove custodial risk — the exchange can't run away with your funds — but they introduce smart-contract risk. Stick to battle-tested protocols from this directory, always verify you're on the official URL, start with small amounts, and consider a hardware wallet for meaningful size.
