What is dYdX?
dYdX is one of the oldest names in decentralized derivatives, founded in 2017 by Antonio Juliano. After years on Ethereum and a StarkEx-based L2, the protocol made a landmark move in 2023: launching v4 as its own sovereign blockchain in the Cosmos ecosystem, with a fully decentralized, off-chain order book and matching engine operated by the validator set itself.
The design gives dYdX the throughput of a centralized exchange — thousands of orders per second — while keeping settlement and custody on-chain. Traders get a professional interface with advanced order types, cross-margining and deep markets on BTC, ETH and a long tail of altcoin perpetuals. Fees are competitive with centralized venues, and no KYC is required.
The DYDX token secures the chain via proof-of-stake and entitles stakers to a share of trading fees paid in USDC. dYdX remains a top-three perp DEX by volume and a natural home for order-book purists; its weaknesses are a bridging step from EVM chains that adds friction, and fierce competition from Hyperliquid at the high end of the market.
