What is GMX?

GMX pioneered the 'real yield' model for decentralized perpetuals. Launched on Arbitrum in 2021 (and later Avalanche), it lets traders open leveraged long and short positions priced by Chainlink oracles — meaning zero price impact on trades — while liquidity comes from multi-asset pools (GLP, and GM in v2) that act as the counterparty to traders.

The economics are elegantly simple: traders pay borrowing and trading fees, and those fees flow to liquidity providers and GMX stakers in ETH or AVAX — not inflationary token emissions. LPs earn when traders lose and lose when traders win, a trade-off that has historically favored LPs thanks to the house edge built into perp trading.

GMX v2 refined the system with isolated GM markets per asset pair, reducing the risk of any single market poisoning the whole pool. It remains one of the highest-fee-generating protocols in DeFi and a favorite of yield seekers who want organic returns; traders should note oracle-priced execution means no slippage but also means you can't place resting limit orders that improve the book.

Key features

  • Leveraged perps up to 100x with zero price impact
  • GM liquidity pools isolating risk per market
  • Fee share paid in ETH/AVAX to stakers and LPs
  • Chainlink oracle pricing with low-latency Data Streams
  • Subaccounts and one-click trading UX

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Sustainable real yield from genuine trading fees
  • No slippage on oracle-priced entries and exits
  • Isolated v2 markets limit contagion risk
  • Long track record of high fee generation

Cons

  • LPs are the counterparty — they lose when traders win big
  • Fewer markets than order-book competitors
  • Oracle dependence is a distinct attack surface
